About the Retreat

We are very excited  to be hosting the Women’s Yoga & Surf retreat! Just like the regular retreats we offer two different packages during this retreat:

Womens Yoga & Surf 

Womens Wisdom & Yoga

Both options will be a  week full of yoga specifically for women, mindfulness meditations, menstrual cycle & fertility awareness sessions , herbal medicine workshops all for women’s health topped up with surf if wanted. Rediscover your strength and living according to the natural cycles of life. This retreat is hosted by women for women. Each of the hosts will bring input on women’s health & cycle (sense) awareness through our own field of expertise & via our own struggles & joys as a woman.

It will be a week of connecting, embodiment & laughter. Connection to our inner & outer nature.

All the retreats will be held at a stunning setting amidst the national park of Costa Vicentina on the South West coast of Portugal. In a secluded sustainable, eco farm house surrounded by amazing an garden, cork & pine forest and added with a lush & big salt water swimming pool.  The farm house consists of two buildings with 5 ensuite bedrooms  and a big inside yoga room. The whole house is  stunningly rebuilt , completely restored in a barefoot luxurious way. The house is very cozy, walking from one room to the next. Both houses have big living rooms with comfy sofas and a fireplace for those chilly evenings. There is a big luxurious farm kitchen where all the great meals will be prepared and laughter will be shared. The yoga room is a big open inside space perfect for all the classes . The most amazing place to host a retreat, an escape away from the crowds, a place to get centered again, to come home. All the ensuite rooms are luxurious, with each room having their own bathroom. The house is only a 10min drive from one of the most beautiful beaches Portugal has to offer: praia do Amoreira with it’s lagoons and amazing waves. All other great beaches are all in the vicinity. 

The eco farm house is set amidst a coastal national park. It’s a self sustainable house connected to solar panels. The big  pool is definitely one of the best features of the house and is completely filled with salt water so no chlorine added.

Your hosts

Yoga Teacher & host

During this retreat Shaini will be there only as a facilitator and host. Shaini is a certified introductory level Iyengar Yoga teacher and is currently studying for her Junior 1.  She is forever a student  following  many classes & workshops with renowned Iyengar teachers Billy Konrad,  Patxi Lizardi,  & others. Her teaching is based on creating strength, flexibility & spaciousness within the body & soul through proper alignment, verbal and precise hands-on adjustments and bringing  awareness into the practice. She  creates a warm, safe & loving space, but also likes to work with playfulness.

Currently she gives weekly yoga classes and with a lot of love organises  Yogaion Retreats. 

Elisabeth Tiesinga

Mindfulness & assisting

Elisabeth (Liz) is a certified mindfulness teacher since 2012. She is currently following an advanced teacher training program with See True Mindfulness Institute in the Netherland. Under the name Dyota (.com) she hosts the 8 week MBSR training, workshops and other mindfulness activities in Portugal. She has been hosting mindfulness workshops for Yogaion since 2013. Besides being passionate about sharing mindfulness, she enjoys practicing yoga, surf and meditation and living a basic lifestyle in nature with her partner, 3 year old daughter and dog.

Neves “Shivani” Estrela

Chef & workshops

Shivani is the amazing chef during all of the retreats. She studied macrobiotics at the Portuguese Macrobiotic Institute in Lisbon, from 2003 to 2005. From 2006, she continued to learn at the macrobiotic center Cuisine et Vacances, in France, until she moved back to Portugal in 2008.She has a great eye for detail & precision. During the retreats she will prepare all the delicious plant based meals. Which will  guaranteed be amazing. Origin-ally from the lovely Azores islands, Shivani now lives with her two wonderful kids on the Costa Vicentina where since 2013 she started to work as a professional cook.


Maria do Carmo Gallet

Menstrual cycle host

Maria is a menstrual cycle & fertility awareness facilitator and a doula. Her journey towards knowing her own body has led her to the path of women’s empowerment and she loves working intensively with women, and their cycles of life. Maria has inspired many women (and their partners!) to choose for healthy and body friendly options for menstrual management, natural birth control and fertility management. As a doula, she has successfully guided women and their partners on the most intimate journey of pregnancy & birth and is praised for her intuition and ability to know exactly what new mothers need.

Poppy Burr

Medical herbalist

Poppy holds a first-class Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Herbal Medicine from Middlesex 

University , and is a member of the College of Practitioners of Phytotherapy (MCPP). She’s been practising as a medical herbalist for three years. Through completing her BSc, Poppy learned how to integrate conventional knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacolo-gy and pathology with holistic medicine theory and practice. As a traditional medical herbalist, she specialises in treating long-standing (chronic) conditions in almost all body systems, and employs nutritional and psychosocial healing approaches as well as herbal medicines in her practice.

“Riding a wave is for many a highly spiritual experience which presents itself as an outward expression of their Yoga & Meditation practice.”

The experience of surfing brings us a feeling of a deep unity with mother nature.  A deep sense of belonging. One that you can already feel even when surfing the smallest of waves. The power of the ocean & the humbleness that it creates.  Everything ceases to exist when for a moment you get pulled a long with the energy of the wave. This is the side of surfing that’s connects us innately as women to the ocean & to surfing in itself. The softer side, the connection with the ocean & the connection to yourself.

Every woman is intimately tied to nature. The menstrual cycle follows the cycle of the moon, ebbing and flowing every 28 days, in most cases. A woman’s body can grow and change, like the earth, to hold the life that grows within. And like the soil below us, a woman’s body can assimilate the nutrients needed to grow the perfect food for her children. Perhaps this connection with the cycles of nature has something to do with the powerful relationship that plants can have in supporting the health of women. For thousands of years, herbs have been consumed as part of rituals of menstruation and as part of supporting a woman through her transitions into puberty, motherhood and menopause. And today, botanical medicines provide potent medicine for modern women.
